There have been various versions of the story The Hunchback of Notre Dam. I have seen the Disney version of this story as a kid. The plot centers on Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of Notre Dame and his struggle to gain acceptance into society.
Here is the Disney version of the story in short – The deformed bell-ringer must assert his independence from a vicious government minister in order to help his friend, a gypsy dancer Esmerelda. He lived a solitary life behind the stone walls, until he met Esmerelda. The woman opened his eyes to adventures he never imagined. She helped him get over his difficult life and he falls in love with her. The other men in the city – Phoebus de Chateaupers – the Captain of the King’s Archers and Frollo – the Archdeacon of Notre Dame also are in love with Esmerelda.
Phoebus releases the gypsies and rallies the citizens of Paris against Frollo and his men, who try to break into the cathedral. Quasimodo and the gargoyles pour molten lead onto the streets to ensure no one enters, but Frollo successfully manages to enter. He pursues Quasimodo and Esmeralda to the balcony where he and Quasimodo both fall over the edge. Frollo falls to his death in the molten lead, while Quasimodo is caught by Phoebus on a lower floor. Afterward, Quasimodo comes to accept that Phoebus and Esmeralda are in love, and he gives them his blessing. The two encourage him to leave the cathedral into the outside world, where the citizens hail him as a hero and accept him into society.
According to the film’s production notes, Quasimodo is “symbolically viewed as being an angel in a devil’s body.” He is “trapped between heaven above [and] the gritty streets of urban Paris viewed as Hell.” He is also constantly reminded he is deformed, ugly, a monster, and an outcast who would be hated if he ever left the confines of the church. I really love the character of Quasimodo and would like to change the character of Esmerelda.
Esmerelda is a devil in the angel’s body. After Esmerelda is rescued from Frollo and the soldiers, Quasimodo hands her over to Phoebus. She then shows her true colours, her black heart and transforms into a witch. She performs black magic on Phoebus and turns him into a devil dragon. She then advances the church to capture it and wants to turn the entire city of Paris under her control.
Quasimodo is informed about her arrival in the city and is under the impression that his friend Esmerelda is here to pay him a friendly visit.
I created an illustration that anticipates the clashes between the evil and good .
I choose to change the ending of the story such as it reflects the condition in Paris in1831 about the history of a whole people, incarnated in the figure of the great cathedral as witness and silent protagonist of that history which continuously faced clashes between the good and evil.
